AssesSment of the left atrial appendage morphoLogy in patients aAfter ischaeMic Stroke — the ASSAM study protocol

Abstract: A b s t r a c tStroke remains the most dangerous and frightening complication of atrial fibrillation (AF). A causal relationship between ischaemic stroke and atrial arrhythmias such as AF or atrial flutter has been well established. Numerous factors predisposing to peripheral embolism in patients with AF have been well established and included in the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score. Although proper anticoagulation minimises the risk attributable to "known" risk factors, stroke may still occur. Thus, "unknown" risk fact… Show more

“…The study design was previously described. 2 Briefly, this prospective observational study included 74 consecutive randomly chosen patients after ischemic stroke, with AF, who were hospitalized in the neurological rehabilitation department after experiencing ischemic stroke between 2014 and 2016. The control group consisted of 83 randomly chosen subjects with AF, without a history of TE, scheduled for AF ablation in the cardiological ward (Fig.…”

“…The detailed study design and patient's inclusion criteria were published elsewhere. 12 All patients selected for the ASSAM study had to have a confirmation of AF before stroke event. It was confirmed in the selection phase based on electrocardiogram (ECG) or Holter monitoring.…”
