Assessment of the Hemiparetic Upper Extremity

Abstract: The Functional Test gives an accurate and immediate assessment of upper extremity capabilities for performance of functional activities. It has been used primarily with patients who have a residual hemiparetic upper extremity following a stroke. This seventeen task test is arranged in seven levels and can be administered in approximately thirty minutes. It is completely portable and can be used practically in many different treatment settings. The information obtained will allow therapists to set realistic fun… Show more

“…Assessments were administered before (preintervention), immediately after (postintervention), and 1 month after the intervention (1-month follow-up). Assessments of movement included the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for the upper extremity (FMA) (Fugl-Meyer, 1980), the Motor Activity log (MAL) (van der lee, Beckerman, Knol, de Vet, & Bouter, 2004), and the Functional Test for the Hemiparetic Upper Extremity (FTHUE) (Wilson, 1984). The participants' perceptions of stroke recovery was assessed with the Stroke Impact scale (SIS) recovery question (Duncan et al, 1999).…”

“…The FTHUE (Wilson, 1984) was used to evaluate the functional motor capability of the participants in TOTE Home. The use of this assessment seemed better at clinically evaluating the perceived motor capability of function by the occupational therapist and the participant.…”

“…The FTHUE has shown strong content validity and inter-rater reliability. 68 Content validity was established with a stepwise regression 1 and a high correlation between the Fugl-Meyer Assessment and the FTHUE. 6 Interrater reliability was found to be statistically significant.…”
