Assessment of the flexural strength of two heat-curing acrylic resins for artificial eyes

Abstract: Prosthetic eyes are artificial substitutes for the eyeball, made of heat-curing acrylic resin, serving to improve the esthetic appearance of the mutilated patient and his/her inclusion in society. The aim of this study was to assess the flexural strength of two heat-curing acrylic resins used for manufacturing prosthetic eyes. Thirty-six specimens measuring 64 x 10 x 3.3 mm were obtained and divided into four groups: acrylic resin for artificial sclera N1 (Artigos Odontológicos Clássico, São Paulo, SP, Brazil)… Show more

“…2,3 Materials used for ocular rehabilitation demand excellent esthetics, durability, adaptation, and biocompatibility. [4][5][6][7] For these reasons, white and colorless acrylic resins are the materials of choice for these prostheses. [6][7][8][9] One of the main reasons for refabrication of ocular prostheses is color degradation.…”

“…The materials used to manufacture removable dental appliances must also satisfy specific requirements in relation to the objectives of orthodontic treatment in particular those regarding aesthetics, resistance and strength (Fernandes et al, 2009(Fernandes et al, , 2010. Chemicallyactivated acrylic resin is the material of choice for the manufacture of these appliances due to its specific characteristics including low cost, good adaptation, biocompatibility, easy handling, satisfactory aesthetics and satisfactory resistance against fractures (RequaClark, 1983).…”
