Assessment of the Fecal Lactobacilli Population in Patients with Hepatitis B Virus-Related Decompensated Cirrhosis and Hepatitis B Cirrhosis Treated with Liver Transplant

Abstract: This study aims to provide an overview of the diversity of intestinal Lactobacillus among Chinese patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related decompensated cirrhosis and who received liver transplant for hepatitis B cirrhosis. Fecal samples were collected from 38 healthy volunteers, 61 patients with HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis (group LC) and 74 patients who had liver transplant for hepatitis B cirrhosis (group LT). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction technology with species-specific primers was ap… Show more

“…Stool samples are non-invasive and easy to obtain. However, the colonic mucosal microbiota has been shown to deviate considerably from stool microbiota, also in cirrhotic patients [4951]. Moreover, whereas microbiota composition along the colon was considered homogenous only a decade ago [50, 51], recent high-throughput microbial profiling techniques revealed that the mucosal microbiota varies along the length of the gut [52, 53].…”

“…Alcoholic dysbiosis is characterized by reduced proportions of commensal probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus species in animal models and humans with cirrhosis 3, 8 . A common and important feature of disease pathogenesis is leakiness of the intestinal barrier, resulting in translocation of microbial products such as lipopolysaccharide from the intestinal lumen to the liver 9 .…”

“…Thus, this remains a potential subject for future investigation. At present, liver fibrosis in China is caused mainly by viral hepatitis (Wu et al 2012), which is difficult to replicate in animal models because of the limited number of compatible hosts. Furthermore, in patients with viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis is usually associated with steatosis (Coban et al 2011).…”
