Assessment of the Feasibility of Implementing a Flash Flood Early Warning System in a Small Catchment Area

Abstract: The occurrence of flash floods is an increasingly common phenomenon. In many parts of the world, it is associated with an increase in the intensity of rainfall. Reducing the financial and social losses caused by the occurrence of local urban floods is possible through the use of hydrodynamic modeling and real-time flood forecasting. The purpose of this study is to assess the ability of the modeling technique to simulate the flow in a small catchment area and to determine the time remaining to reach the set war… Show more

“…Observed climate anomalies necessitate the need for thoughtful, systemic, and consistent actions aimed at mitigating the negative impact of human activities [1][2][3][4]. These actions should particularly focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion [5][6][7][8].…”

“…Meanwhile, an equally important factor that affects flood risk in urban areas is the management of stormwater runoff from nonurbanized areas. Natural landscapes, such as forests, meadows, and wetlands, play a crucial role in the stormwater retention process, delaying the flow of stormwater to rivers and drainage systems [20]. This significantly reduces the risk of flash floods.…”

“…Analyses that take into account the different areas, design of the roof, volumes of rainwater storage tanks, and number of occupants are known. However, the location can also affect the economic aspect of the investment [18]. Different regions have not only fluctuating precipitation, but also different water fee structures that can affect the cost-effectiveness of rainwater use.…”
