This study aimed to identify possibilities to improve the quality of the stabilized biowaste coming from the mechanical-biological treatment of municipal solid waste produced in Rome for possible recovery rather than landfilling. The waste sampled before and after the first and the fourth week of aerobic biodegradation as well as different particle size classes composing the biostabilized materials were characterized in order to investigate the content and distribution of contaminants. Results showed, firstly, that the stabilized biowaste was not biologically stable after 4 weeks of biostabilization process, presenting dynamic respiration index [1,000 mg O 2 kg VS -1 h -1 . Heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) content fulfilled the requirements for utilization, but by contrast, their release in water phase was quite high and not complying with Italian regulatory limits for waste recovery. In order to raise the quality, the biological process management should be improved by increasing the water amount to add to the rotting waste since the output material had moisture (19.7 % WM) lower than the recommended content for an optimized aerobic biodegradation ([40 %). Furthermore, fractions having particle size higher than 10 mm, composed of high content of impurities and heavy metals, should be separated by obtaining a reduction in chemical-physical contamination. Finer waste flow (\10 mm) can be recovered in environmental remediation activities, whereas coarser fractions ([10 mm) can be used in waste-to-energy plants, given the great content of high calorific value materials and the compliance with characteristics defined for solid recovered fuels.

The EC Directive regarding Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) stipulates that member states should prioritize effective measures for the treatment of residues with a view to developing different forms of valorization, among these energetic. Consequently there is a need to implement management technologies which provide a variety of complementary solutions to recycling and with the aim of avoiding elimination through incineration and landfill.Different technologies are available for energetic valorization of residues including bio-methanization, pyrolysis, gasification, etc. Each method can be adapted to suit social, ambient, territorial and economic variables. This study provides a cost analysis for 13 municipalities in the province of Granada, Spain, ranging in populations of 300 to 21,500, forming part of a total 93,300 inhabitants, producing 45,000 tons pa of MSW.Having analyzed bio-methanization, production of Solid Recoverable Fuels (SRF) and gasification, the conclusion is that the introduction of these methods would generate a levy, (council tax) payable by ratepayers/property holders, of 23.29€/t, in the case of gasification and 35.96€/t for SRF production technology. These costs compare favourably to the actual incineration and landfill methods used in this area (circa 42€/t) and would produce net financial and environmental benefits in management costs, reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels and reduction of MSW sent to landfill.

The bigger size MSW separated by the mechanical treatment (MT) as combustible matter is processed to RDF (refuse derived fuel) for energy generation, while the separated MSW after MT (MT residue) is used for producing organic fertilizer and biogas (CH 4 ) by employing the BT stage. In Korea, municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment is conducted by converting wastes into energy resources using the mechanicalbiological treatment (MBT). The small size MSW to be separated from raw MSW by mechanical treatment (MT) is generally treated by biological treatment that consists of high composition of food residue and paper and so forth. In this research, the hydrothermal treatment was applied to treat the surrogate MT residue composed of paper and/or kimchi. It was shown that the hydrothermal treatment increased the calorific value of the surrogate MT residue due to increasing fixed carbon content and decreasing oxygen content and enhanced the dehydration and drying performances of kimchi. Comparing the results of paper and kimchi samples, the calorific value of the treated product from paper was increased more effectively due to its high content of cellulose. Furthermore, the change of the calorific value before and after the hydrothermal treatment of the mixture of paper and kimchi can be well predicted by this change of paper and kimchi only. The hydrothermal treatment can be expected to effectively convert high moisture MT residue into a uniform solid fuel.
