“…The strong association observed between disturbances in the embodied self and dissociation extends the findings of a previous study suggesting that discomfort with body image following sexual abuse is associated with dissociation (Cann & Harris, 2003). Indeed, dissociative reactions are typically associated with exposure to trauma, such as sexual abuse (Berthelot et al, 2012; Ford, 2013; Gaon, Kaplan, Dwolatzky, Perry, & Witztum, 2013), and are understood as psychological defenses against the trauma itself (Putnam, 1991) or against emotions and memories associated with the trauma (Foa & Hearst-Ikeda, 1996).…”

“…Most of the studies addressing the link between the self and symptomatology have focused on self-esteem, given that this dimension of the self is more accessible to measurement. Poor self-esteem has been found to be associated with dissociation, particularly the negative self-perceptions regarding physical appearance (Cann & Harris, 2003), as well as internalizing problems in childhood, particularly depression (Sowislo & Orth, 2013). Findings with regard to externalizing difficulties have been less convergent.…”

“…To our knowledge, no studies have been done to examine the potential relation between dissociation and habitual susceptibility. Dissociation was measured in the present study with Goldberg's (1999) Curious Experiences Survey (CES; see also Cann & Harris, 2003). The CES consists of 31 statements that are responded to on a 5-point Likerttype scale (1 ϭ never, 5 ϭ always) with higher scores being indicative of self-reported dissociative experiences.…”
