Assessment of the antiproliferative potential of Cissampelos owariensis (P. Beauv) methanolic extract in Wistar rats

Abstract: Cissampelos owariensis is a medicinal plant with a wide range of therapeutic uses.  In this study, the objective was to further assess its antiproliferative potential using cell proliferation and tumor suppressor markers. Solvent extraction of C. owariensis leaves was done using methanol. Twenty (20) male albino Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups 1–4 (n=5) and respectively administered with methanolic extracts of C. owariensis at 0, 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg for 30 days. After treatment, the hepat… Show more

“…Herbal Medicine Products are derivatives ofmedicinal plants which are applied for therapeutic purposes and maintenance of physiological equilibrium (Zhang et al, 2017). Essentially, the therapeutic activity of medicinal plants and their products confers on them the empirical value that amplifies their relevance as alternative or complementary sources of health care (Omotoso et al, 2021). In most parts of the Southwest Nigeria, there is a widespread natural biodiversity of medicinal plants which in turn makes herbal medicinal products to be relatively affordable and accessible.…”

“…Yusuf (2003) also reported its use against headache, fever, most especially malaria and typhoid fevers, and powdered leaves are spread in tea, or "pap" to be drunk for the treatment of stomach related problems. Pharmacological studies on this plant revealed that it has anti-proliferative (Omotoso et al, 2021), anti-diabetic (Ekeanyanwu et al, 2012), antimicrobial (Arya, 2011), anti-diarrhea and antibacterial (Zumbes et al, 2016) properties. C. owariensis leaves are rich in flavonoid, saponins, tannins and moderate amount of alkaloids (Ekeanyanwu et al, 2012), two sesquiterpenes have been isolated from this plant (Efiom, 2010).…”
