Assessment of the anterior loop of the inferior alveolar nerve via cone-beam computed tomography

Abstract: ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to evaluate different anatomical variants of the anterior loop of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) via cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).Materials and MethodsCBCT images of 71 patients (36 males and 35 females) were evaluated. We used the classification described by Solar for IAN evaluation. In this classification, three different types of IAN loops were introduced prior to emerging from the mental foramen. We classified patients according to this system and introduced a… Show more

“…Several studies have appraised the anatomy and prevalence of the AL by using different methods such as cadaver dissection; radiographs such as orthopantomograms, 3D CT, and CBCT; or a combination of anatomical and radiographic evaluation ( Apostolakis and Brown, 2012 , Greenstein and Tarnow, 2006 , Jacobs et al, 2004 , Kuzmanovic et al, 2003 , Misch and Crawford, 1990 , Misch and Crawford, 1990 , Shaban et al, 2017 , Uchida et al, 2009 ).…”

“…Considering these findings, it is important to consider a minimum safe distance to the AL, which may vary widely in function of the different studies carried out: 2 mm, 4 mm, or 6 mm. [192021222324] In practical terms, we emphasize the importance of a case by case evaluation and no specific measurements for a safety distance. Individual, gender, age, race, assessing technique used, and degree of alveolar bone atrophy largely influence the different anatomical variations.…”

“…According Solar et al's classification, the paths of the MC were in frequency order: type III (AL + Y), type II (T), and type I (Y) [ 3 , 4 , 34 ] ( Table 3 ). Moreover, they had another type called “others,” including other forms of AL seen at 26.8% [ 34 ].…”
