Assessment of the amount of tooth wear on dental casts and intra‐oral photographs

Abstract: Tooth wear is a multifactorial condition, leading to the loss of dental hard tissues. Many grading scales are available to assess the amount of tooth wear, one of which is the tooth wear evaluation system (TWES). A grading scale can be used chairside, on casts and on photographs. The aim was to test whether the grading scales of the TWES, used on casts and on photographs, resulted in comparable scores. In addition, it was tested whether these scales can be used to assess tooth wear reliably on photographs. Of … Show more

“…The exposure of dentin cores through the loss of the enamel cover can also be clearly delimited. The loss of one‐third of the crown length sometimes appears less clear, however, studies 14,16,17 have shown that the evaluation of tooth wear is reproducible at this level of differentiation. The original 5‐point ordinal scale had been developed in Amsterdam as early as in 2001 16 .…”

“…The original 5‐point ordinal scale had been developed in Amsterdam as early as in 2001 16 . Reproducibility has also been demonstrated for the 8‐point ordinal scale, which includes further subdivisions of Grades 1 and 3 12,17 . It is helpful that this evaluation is reproducible not only clinically (intra‐orally), but also if intra‐oral photographs and/or dental casts are used instead 17 .…”

“…Consequently, when time progresses, these surfaces become more difficult to restore. 11 In the future, intra-oral scans can be used to measure objectively the amount of loss of the dental hard tissues. 4,10 The dental team has two treatment options available, namely counselling/monitoring and a restorative treatment.…”

“…Monitoring can be done by quantifying the amount of tooth wear with an evaluation system, intra-orally, on casts and/or on intra-oral photographs. 11 In the future, intra-oral scans can be used to measure objectively the amount of loss of the dental hard tissues. The main goal of counselling and monitoring is to avoid further loss of hard dental tissues as much as possible, as well as measure and determine tooth material loss over time.…”
