Assessment of the affective and rational bases for urgent decision-making under extreme circumstances

Abstract: In the framework of dual-type theories, decision making is based on two types of information processing: intuitive and rational. Inspired by this framework, our aims were to develop a brief selfrating measurement instrument to assess the affective and rational bases for urgent decision-making under extreme circumstances, and to study its psychometric properties. The samples comprised cadets from a military academy and participants from the general population. The results showed evidence of acceptable reliabili… Show more

“…From the several oblique rotation criteria for rotating the factors, we selected the Crawford-Ferguson (CF) Quartimax rotation because it produces cleaner factorial structures, similar to the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) results, a type of analysis that we used in a later step. This rotation had been used with data as ordered categories and it had produced interpretable factor solutions in our previous research (Cosentino and Castro Solano, 2014; Cosentino et al, in press). For the rotation procedure, we used the software Comprehensive Exploratory Factor Analysis (version 3.04; Tateneni et al, 2009).…”

“…Another goal was to corroborate the existence of statistically significant associations between the dimensions of BUDECI test (Cosentino et al 2017) Rational Urgent Decisions with the number of correct answers. The results showed the existence of a positive and statistically significant association between the two variables (r = .59; p <.001).…”

“…To measure the types of decision-making that address urgent situations, the Basis for Urgent Decisions under Extreme Circumstances Inventory (BUDECI) (Cosentino et al Azzollini, Depaula and Castillo 2017) was administered. This instrument is a short protocol made up of eight items designed to evaluate, through two dimensions, the personal tendency to take rational urgent decisions (DUR for its acronym in Spanish) and rational affective decisions (DUA for its acronym in Spanish) under extreme situations.…”
