Higher education institutions are major drivers of change in achieving environmental sustainability both within college campuses and beyond campuses in communities at large. However, achieving campus sustainability is not possible without the involvement of students as one of the major stakeholders of a university. Based on survey of 152 students of the College of Architecture and Planning, University of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, this study explores students' assessment of campus sustainability components: curriculum and research; campus operations; and community involvement. The results show that even though the students indicate a great deal of awareness and concern about campus environmental sustainability, they lack interest and willingness to participate in initiatives towards achieving sustainability. Apart from some sustainable landscaping and waste recycling practices, there are few sustainability initiatives in transportation and energy and water conservation on the campus. Offered courses and student projects have also been reported to have modest focus on sustainability. The article concludes by highlighting the roles of incorporating sustainability into campus operations, and training university students in promoting environmental sustainability in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

Economic, demographic, social, technological and political changes worldwide are putting academic institutions under intense pressures. In response, universities are adopting new managerial approaches to their activities: lean, six sigma and lean six sigma. A portrait of this experience emerges from reviewing the literature published over the past decade using the databases Compendex & INSPEC/Engineering Village and Scopus. These approaches have been applied primarily on a highly localized basis to teaching-related processes or to services such as financing, data processing and building maintenance. Some of the challenges raised are not unknown outside of the university setting. The complexity of universities, the difficulties of interpreting notions such as the client, added value, and the connexions between teaching and research, make the implementation of these approaches difficult. While the few measured results available suggest that they do hold promise, their impact remains to be determined.

RESUMOEsta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar o grau de sustentabilidade de um edifício em uma universidade comunitária (objeto de análise), direcionando-se à sua eficiência energética. Portanto, visa contribuir para a literatura, ao dar base para a aplicação do sistema SICOGEA em outros edifícios e contribuir para a consolidação de um sistema de gestão ambiental eficaz e consistente. A pesquisa pode ser classificada quanto aos procedimentos técnicos como estudo de caso. Referente aos objetivos é descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa. Para a fundamentação da pesquisa, utilizou-se da literatura referente à gestão ambiental e avaliação da sustentabilidade de edifícios. Quanto aos resultados encontrados, o índice global de sustentabilidade da universidade foi de 48%, o que pode ser considerado regular, ou seja, que visa atender somente à legislação. Por isso, acredita-se que a instituição pode realizar melhorias com vistas a alcançar um índice mais eficiente. Ao levar em consideração os itens deficitários, sugerem-se as seguintes ações: introduzir licitação sustentável; empenhar-se para a obtenção de selos e certificações; buscar evitar multas e indenizações ambientais; e aplicar auditoria ambiental. Entretanto, esclarece-se que essas são sugestões que devem ser levadas em consideração juntamente com questões financeiras e dentro do planejamento da instituição. A análise de sua sustentabilidade financeira foi considerada boa e idealiza-se que permaneça.
