Objective Executive deficits may play an important role in late-life suicide. Yet, current evidence in this area is inconclusive and does not indicate whether these deficits are broadly associated with suicidal ideation or specific to suicidal behavior. This study examined global cognition and specifically executive function impairments as correlates of suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior in depressed older adults, with the goal of extending an earlier preliminary study. Design Case-control study. Setting University-affiliated psychiatric hospital. Participants All were aged 60+: 83 depressed suicide attempters, 43 depressed individuals having suicidal ideation with a specific plan, 54 non-suicidal depressed participants, and 48 older adults with no history of psychiatric disorders. Measurements Global cognitive function - Dementia Rating Scale (DRS), Executive function - Executive Interview (EXIT). Results Both suicide attempters and suicide ideators performed worse than the two comparison groups on the EXIT, with no difference between suicide attempters and suicide ideators. On the DRS total score, as well as on Memory and Attention subscales, suicide attempters and ideators and non-suicidal depressed subjects performed similarly and were impaired relative to with non-psychiatric control subjects. Controlling for education, substance use disorders, and medication exposure did not affect group differences in performance on either the EXIT or DRS. Conclusions Executive deficits, captured with a brief instrument, are associated broadly with suicidal ideation in older depressed adults but do not appear to directly facilitate suicidal behavior. Our data are consistent with the idea that different vulnerabilities may operate at different stages in the suicidal process.

Relationships between traumatic life events and suicide risk were studied in two samples of jail inmates with a low (N = 216) and a high (N = 51) suicide risk. Although nonsuicidal inmates reported a high prevalence of traumatic life events, suicidal inmates reported even higher prevalence rates. Suicidal inmates reported more episodes of sexual abuse, physical maltreatment, emotional maltreatment, abandonment, and suicide attempts by significant others. They also had experienced more traumatic life events during childhood, later life, and detention. It is concluded that traumatic life events are associated with suicide risk and that such an association remains in a population with a high prevalence of traumatic life events. It is also concluded that suicide risk is dependent of the type of life event, the timing of the event, and the type of persons involved in the event.

Objective-The purpose of this open trial was to test the acceptability of Motivational Interviewing to Address Suicidal Ideation (MI-SI) for psychiatrically hospitalized veterans with suicidal ideation, estimate its pre-post effect size on the severity of suicidal ideation, and examine the rate of treatment engagement after discharge.Methods-Participants received a screening assessment, baseline assessment, one or two MI-SI sessions, post-treatment assessment, and 60-day follow-up assessment. Thirteen veterans were enrolled, nine (70%) completed both MI-SI sessions and the post-treatment assessment, and eleven (85%) completed the follow-up assessment.Results-Participants found MI-SI to be acceptable. They experienced large reductions in the severity of suicidal ideation at post-treatment and follow-up. In the two months following discharge, 73% of participants completed two or more mental health or substance abuse treatment sessions each month.Conclusions-These preliminary findings suggest that MI-SI has potential to reduce risk for suicide in psychiatrically hospitalized veterans and that a more rigorous trial is needed.
