Assessment of stroke volume variation for prediction of fluid responsiveness using the modified FloTrac™ and PiCCOplus™ system

Abstract: Introduction Stroke volume variation (SVV) has repeatedly been shown to be a reliable predictor of fluid responsiveness. Various devices allow automated clinical assessment of SVV. The aim of the present study was to compare prediction of fluid responsiveness using SVV, as determined by the FloTrac™/ Vigileo™ system and the PiCCOplus™ system.

“…21,23 An Arrow ® 7 Fr pulmonary artery catheter (Teleflex, Reading, PA, USA) was inserted into the right internal jugular vein for fluid infusion and to monitor CVP, cardiac output and SV using a S/5 Carestation ® (Datex-Ohmeda, Helsinki, Finland). Independent research staff collected the data generated by the FloTrac™/Vigileo™ system in order to maintain blinding in the study.…”

“…In studies on patients with cardiovascular or pulmonary disease, SVV obtained with the FloTrac™/Vigileo™ system could have been influenced by the disease itself, the patient's body position, thoracic pressure or the surgical operation that was performed. 5,19,21,23 For such cases, PAC or transoesophageal echocardiography may be the optimal choice, while the FloTrac™/Vigileo™ system may be an attractive alternative for monitoring.…”

“…Identifying these values using PiCCO technology, dynamically, in real-time, will allow us to improve our therapeutic decisions. Haemodynamic monitoring employing PiCCO system parameters has been used in numerous studies with surgical or non-surgical patients who required intensive care [13][14][15]. However, there is a great difference between septic patients and surgical patients regarding the duration of ventilation or surgical hemodynamic changes.…”

“…In elective cardiac surgery SVV assessed using FloTrac /Vigileo and PiCCOplus exhibited similar performances but the FloTrac-SVV was observed to have a lower threshold value than the PiCCOplus-SVV (10% versus 13%) [60]. In comparison with LiDCOplus, in a study on post-CABG patients the SVV values offered by the two systems were significantly different, the two methods being not interchangeable [61].…”
