The current study was carried out to examine the spatial and temporal variations of physicochemical water quality parameters of Lake Bunyonyi. The observations were made on the surface water of Lake Bunyonyi for 1 year to determine the water quality. The basic 12 variables used to determine the quality of water were measured monthly at nine stations. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, electric conductivity (EC), pH and Secchi depth (SD) were measured in the field, while parameters like total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) were determined following APHA 2017 standard guidelines for physicochemical analysis. Taking into account standard guidelines for drinking water by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the water quality index (WQI) was used to determine the water quality. Temperature, DO, pH, turbidity and EC did not differ significantly among the study stations (p > 0.05) but showed significant temporal variations among the study months (p < 0.05). Likewise, TN, TP, NO2-N, NO3-N and SRP did not differ significantly among the study stations (p > 0.05) but showed significant temporal variations among the study months (p < 0.05). The WQI values ranged from 28.36 to 49 across and from 28.2 to 56.2 between study months with an overall mean value of 36.9. The measured water quality variables did not exceed the UNBS and WHO standards for drinking water in all months and at all stations. According to these values, the water quality of Lake Bunyonyi generally belongs to the ‘good’ class in terms of drinking water quality based on the WQI classification. The study findings are fundamentally important for policy makers in setting guidelines for effective lake management.

These findings may be due especially to the oil production activities (Kara 2013), as related to the geological formation of the area, and the effect of settlements and agricultural activities (Demir Yetiş 2019; Kumar et al 2019;Ozguven and Demir Yetis 2020). The study was conducted to determine the situation in terms of groundwater heavy metal contamination at 18 sampling stations close to the Diyarbakir Oil Production Area in Turkey. The heavy metal contamination indices were used during the assessment process. To further investigate the potential sources of heavy metals, multivariate statistical techniques were applied. Concentrations of heavy metals were found to decrease as: Cd > Mn > Fe > Pb > B > As > Zn > Al > Se > Hg. In the diagram of pH and metal load, the majority of samples (88.89%) were classified as "near neutral-low metal." In general, the study's results showed the groundwater HPI value to be lower than the critical value of 100. Based on the HPI values, 100% of the samples were classified as having a "medium" level of pollution. The HEI results showed that 83.3% of the samples were classified as having a "medium" level of pollution, and 3% as "low." The Cd (contamination index) results revealed that all of the samples in the study area were found to be substantially "high" in their level of heavy metal pollution. The study's factor analysis found that seven factors explained 79.2% of the total variation in the data. In the cluster analysis, good outcomes were seen with three different similarity groups. These results show that the factors responsible for heavy metal pollution primarily relate to oil exploration-production activities, mining, industrial and domestic waste disposal, agricultural activities, as well as being of geogenic origin.

ÖzKullanılmış suların çevreye olan zararlarını azaltmak ve su kaynaklarımızın devamlılığını sağlamak için atıksu arıtma tesisleri kurulmaktadır. Evsel nitelikli atıksular farklı proses ve teknolojiler kullanılarak arıtılmaktadır. Günümüzde evsel atıksu arıtımında kullanılan en yaygın sistemler stabilizasyon havuzları, damlatmalı filtre, aktif çamur ve aneorobik arıtma gibi biyolojik sistemlerdir. Karakterizasyon bakımından farklı özelliğe sahip olan evsel atıksular için mevcut proseslerin optimize edilmesi veya bölge koşulları dikkate alınarak uygun arıtma teknolojilerinin kullanılması önem arz etmektedir. Fizibilite çalışmalarının yetersizliği, tip proje uygulamaları ve proje hataları ile birlikte, mekanik, elektrik, inşaat kaynaklı sorunlar, atıksu arıtma tesisleri problemlerini oluşturmaktadır. Çıkış suyunda istenilen kalitenin elde edilmesi ve tesiste işletme maliyetlerinin azaltılması için projelendirme, inşaat ve işletme aşamalarında yapılan hatalar en aza indirilmelidir. Bu çalışmada Van iline hizmet eden ve işletmede olan 6 adet atıksu arıtma tesisinin (İskele, Edremit, Gevaş, Başkale, Çelebibağ ve Gölağzı) genel özellikleri de dikkate alınarak ilk kez il özelinde tesis bazlı olarak işletme problemleri araştırılmış ve bunlara yönelik çözüm önerileri değerlendirilmiştir.
