This paper presents results of a multidisciplinary research initiative examining human responses to environmental change at the intersection of the southern coastal plain of the Caspian Sea and the foothills of the Alborz Mountains during the terminal Pleistocene and early Holocene. Our palaeoenvironmental analysis of two sedimentary cores obtained from a lagoon in close proximity to four caves, occupied by human groups during the transition from hunting and gathering to food-producing ways of life in this region, confirms Charles McBurney's 1968 hypothesis that when Caspian Sea levels were high, Mesolithic hunters were reliant on seal and deer, but as water levels receded and a wide coastal plain emerged, hunters consumed a different range of herbivorous mammalian species. Palynological evidence obtained from these two cores also demonstrates that the cool and dry climatic conditions often associated with the Younger Dryas stadial do not appear to have been extreme in this region. Thus, increasingly sedentary hunting and gathering groups could have drawn 19/07/2019 2 on plant and animal resources from multiple ecological niches without suffering significant resource stress or reduced population levels that may have been encountered in neighbouring regions. Our analyses of botanical, faunal and archaeological remains from a recently-discovered open-air Mesolithic and aceramic Neolithic site also shows an early process of Neolithization in the southern Caspian basin, which was a very gradual, lowcost adaptation to new ways of life, with neither the abandonment of hunting and gathering, nor a climatic trigger event for the emergence of a low-level, food-producing society.

Assessment of microalgae diversity in relation to hydrocarbon pollutants in port sediments: Case study of Sfax port-Tunisia

The present research has been particularly oriented to characterize the organic pollutants as phthalates, hydrocarbons and in Sfax port sediments. As the microalgae performed good results in their bioaccumulation and biodegradation, the microalgae species in both port sediments and column waters were counted and identified. Di-n-butyl phthalate, Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate as well as aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were identified through GC-MS chromatograms released on sediment extracts of three samples taken from the Sfax port basins located on the eastern Tunisian coast. Microalgae identification and cell counts of sediment samples as well as water columns were performed applying the sedimentation method of Utermöhl. The chromatograms revealed developed peaks of phthalates compared to those of aliphatic hydrocarbons with successive humps corresponding to an unresolved complex mixture, corroborating an advanced degree of biodegradation. The n-alkanes distribution and the development of the bb-epimers of C27 − 29 steranes proved the petrogenic hydrocarbons origin. This result was equally confirmed by the ratio of fluoranthene and pyrene PAHs concentrations. The hydrocarbons degradation was assigned to the relative abundance of certain microalgae species, already recognized to degrade hydrocarbons pollutants such as diatoms Skeletonema costatum and Nitzschia sp.. The proliferation of toxic dinoflagellates as Karenia selliformis enhanced the high pollution degree of port sediments. Whereas other microalgae species displaying high abundance in port sediments, revealed their capacities to degrade organic matter and PAHs. The microalgae-cyanobacteria consortium as Pinnularia sp.- Merismopedia sp. seemed to display a powerful tolerance to both trace metals and organic pollutants.

Relative effects of spatio-seasonal variations on the quantitative and qualitative status of phytoplankton in 20 sampling locations of Temsah Lake were examined during winter and summer 2018. The study reveals that the population structure consisted of 105 species from 69 genera, with an annual average of 924155 cell/L. Bacillariophyceae formed the most dominant group with 42.45% of total phytoplankton with an average of 372379 cell/L. Navicula creptocephala was the most abundant species representing 19.16% of total diatoms and 7.78% of the whole standing crop with an annual average of 376879 cell/L. The highest phytoplankton abundance was in the Northern locations. Phytoplankton density showed a negative correlation of pH, temperature and TDS and positively correlated with nutrient content such as nitrate and silicate. In general, summer showed high indices value compared to winter and the diversity index in the current study ranged in moderate pollution range. The polluted state of the aquatic ecosystem in El-Temsah Lake during summer is comparatively higher than winter during the study period. Palmer’s and diversity indices showed that Northern sites were the most flourishing and polluted sites. The study also recorded a number of tolerate algae (13 genera and 8 species), which can be used as an indicator for different degrees of organic pollution. Genus and species Palmer’s Index scores of the northern site were in the range of ≥20 during summer, indicating most of the sampling locations showed probable to confirmed high level of organic pollution.
