Assessment of Socket Pressure during Walking in Rapid Fit Prosthetic Sockets

Abstract: (1) Background: A sustainable casting system that combines the use of a polystyrene bag, a prosthetic liner and a vacuum system was developed to reduce fabrication time while maintaining comfort for the trans-tibial prosthesis user. (2) Methods: Eight prosthetists (28.7 ± 8.25 years old) fit ten trans-tibial prosthesis wearers (46 ± 12.4 years old) with two types of total surface bearing (TSB) prostheses; a polystyrene bead (PS) prosthesis and a plaster of paris (POP) prosthesis. Duration of casting and combin… Show more

“…There were two trials for each liner and a 5 min rest for each trial. Forty data steps were used to analyse the pressure distribution [ 30 ]. After the 2-min walking test, the subjects were asked to rate the comfort of the socket using the SCS.…”

“…The prosthesis is divided into several parts (inner soft socket, outer hard socket, ring for connection to the myoelectrical hand, etc.). The purpose of the designed outer socket is to connect the inner socket with the functional elements of the prosthesis, to protect the stump and the internal mechanical or electrical parts of the prosthesis, and to provide a cosmetic or design replacement with an emphasis on the individual needs of the patient [11,12]. All of these requirements are suitable for the use of new 3D printing technologies, but the exact construction and design process needs to be verified and validated in collaboration with patients [13].…”
