Assessment of serum chemerin levels in acanthosis nigricans: A case–control study

Abstract: Background: Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is an asymptomatic skin condition linked to several underlying systemic conditions. Chemerin is an adipokine that increases during inflammatory disorders such as metabolic syndrome (MetS). Aims:This case-control study investigates the link between AN and the underlying MetS and serum levels of chemerin in individuals with obesity.Patients/Methods: Twenty-five adults with AN and obesity (body mass index[BMI] > 30 kg/m 2 ), 25 adults with obesity but no AN, and 25 healthy co… Show more

“…The high plasma levels of chemerin in patients may indicate the involvement of this adipokine in the pathogenesis of MetS and its role as an early VPA-MetS biomarker. Overall, clinical data indicate that circulating chemerin levels are elevated in patients with obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease [57,76].…”

“…Of the patients with AN, 100% met MS criteria, suggesting that AN may serve as a non-invasive marker of MS. This would make AN an easy-to-apply clinical measure that may prove useful in addition to different blood markers of IR or associated inflammation [ 71 ].…”
