Assessment of Seismic Capacity for Reinforced Concrete Frames with Perforated Unreinforced Brick Masonry Infill Wall

Abstract: Infill walls increase the strength and stiffness of the reinforced concrete frames, but they usually are not considering in design. However, when the infills are considered in the design, the opening for doors/windows necessitates investigation as well. This research work aims to investigate the effect of perforations (openings) in the infill walls on the performance of infilled RC frames, in other words, this research investigates the number of infill walls in infilled RC frames. Based on the current construc… Show more

“…After adding the bracing, the displacement decreased dramatically, reaching the first storey to 3.0 mm; on the third storey the displacement became 12.5 mm. The displacement became 27.5 mm on the sixth story, representing a decrease of more than 100% from what it was before t the addition of bracing [22], [23].…”

“…Approximately 1391 billion bricks per year are utilized worldwide, and its demand is expanding [1]. Nevertheless, the clay deposits excessive use in brick production has depleted this natural material and is also the root cause of wastage of fertile land [2]. Nowadays, many developing countries face severe waste management issues caused by the increasing population, urban and industrial development [3].…”

“…They proposed to think about the modernization of an open story using a reinforced concrete shear wall, steel bracing and infill wall. [37] studied the effect of openings in infill walls on the performance of filled reinforced concrete frames, in other words, this research studies the number of infill walls in infill walls filled reinforced concrete frames. Rahem et al (2021) [24] specified that the aim of the study is to examine the role of masonry infill on the damage response of steel framing without and with different types of opening systems subjected to nonlinear static analysis and to a nonlinear temporal analysis.…”

“…Hence the main objective is to present a seismic assessment framework approach for undamaged and damaged reinforced concrete structures. Umar et al (2020) [37] studied two samples which were tested with reverse cyclic loading (quasistatic test). Also, they found, during experimental tests on the filled reinforced concrete frame having less opening in the infill wall, that this frame has more resistance to lateral loads, more rigidity and dissipated more energy compared to the frame having a large opening in the infill wall.…”
