Assessment of Seasonal Rainfall Drought Indices, Nyala City Sudan

Abstract: Drought is an unpredictable hydrological phenomenon, and climate change has made it difficult to predict and analyze droughts. Nyala city airport metrological station rainfall records from 1943 to 2017 (75 years) were investigated. Four statistical drought indices were used; the standardized precipitation index (SPI), the rainfall anomaly index (RAI), the rainfall decile percent index (RDI), and the percent normal precipitation index (PNI). The study analyzes, assesses, compares, and determines the proper drou… Show more

“…Unlike other drought indices, SPI requires only rainfall data to characterize meteorological drought. The SPI measures the rainfall deficit relative to the long-term average to characterize the severity of the drought in different aggregate periods [ 20 , 44 , 45 ]. The SPI values were standardized; therefore, it allows the comparison of SPI values across diverse locations.…”

“…Te SAI was used to estimate the irregularities of rainfall variations in a certain region. It helps to identify the drought period by determining the dry and wet years of the recording periods [35][36][37][38][39]. Te value of SAI is calculated by…”

“…Several studies assessing meteorological and hydrological droughts using RDI or SPI have been conducted in different regions of the world. For example, meteorological drought studies using the RDI method have been conducted in Iran , Sudan (Atiem et al, 2022), China (Abro et al, 2022), Lithuania (Nazarenko et al, 2022), and Sri Lanka (Abeysingha & Rajapaksha, 2020). However, few studies have explained the linkages between meteorological and hydrological droughts due to their inherent complexity (Dikshit et al, 2022).…”
