Assessment of Salinity Tolerance Deploying Antioxidant Defense Systems in Gerbera Jamesonii

Abstract: Inconsistency in the environment exposes plants to various abiotic stresses. This results in damage of a plant’s cellular components due to excessive accumulation of unstable reactive oxygen. Besides, it also disrupts enzymatic/non-enzymatic detoxification mechanisms in plants making them more sensitive. Salinity is one such abiotic stress which disrupts regular physiological mechanisms in plants. In this study, we examined the effects of salinity using NaCl in four different genotypes of Gerbera jamesonii cv … Show more

“…The experiments in the present study were designed as a randomized complete block containing three treatment groups with three replicates per treatment: (a) Control (0 mM NaCl), (b) salt alone (200 mM NaCl) as per Uzma et al [7], and (c) salt + Spd (200 mM NaCl + 1.0 mM Spd). Before the design of the treatment groups, Spd concentration of 1.0 mM was standardized by treating G. jamesonii plants using a range of concentrations of Spd (0.25 mM, 0.50 mM, 0.75 mM, and 1.0 mM) and the resulting concentration of 1.0 mM was optimized (data not shown).…”

“…Increased demand for G. jamesonii across the globe has resulted in potential market value for floriculture both in domestic and international markets. The turnover of floriculture industry is estimated to be more than 8.2 billion USD (US dollars) in 2022 which is thought to be exponentially increasing [7].…”

“…Gerberas are used as cut flowers and occupy fifth place in the world's floral trade exhibiting high sales around the year [2]. Although Gerbera is very popular in the floral industry, farmers to date have experienced huge losses due to its vulnerability to biotic and abiotic stress [3]. In view of the above, Gerbera growers prefer polyhouses which offer controlled conditions for sustainable production.…”

“…Gerbera which sensitive to abiotic/biotic stresses, is typically grown commercially in a controlled environment, such as a net or poly house. [23] Observed the effects of exposing all four Gerbera genotypes (Red, Yellow, Pink, and White) to a 200 mM NaCl concentration for 20 days. After conducting morphological observations, it was noticed that the White genotype showed more pronounced bleaching compared to the Red and Pink genotypes.…”

“…To preserve the aesthetic and commercial value of Gerbera, it is important to develop salt-tolerant varieties. [24], In a study conducted by [23] using an in vitro leaf disc approach, the salt sensitivity level of Gerbera was investigated by exposing it to varying NaCl concentrations (0-200 mM). The study also measured various anti-oxidative enzymatic and non-enzymatic defense systems, as well as MDA and chlorophyll content.…”
