Assessment of right ventricular function by strain rate imaging in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract: The purpose of the current study was to compare right ventricular (RV) myocardial wall velocities (tissue Doppler imaging) and strain rate imaging (SRI) parameters with conventional echocardiographic indices evaluating RV function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. In total, 39 patients with COPD and 22 healthy subjects were included in the current study. Seventeen patients had pulmonary artery pressure ,35 mmHg (group I) and 22 patients had pulmonary artery pressure .35 mmHg (group II). … Show more

“…It is deserving of note that echocardiography is deemed an inaccurate tool for the quantitative assessment of the RV function because of a lack of an ideal geometric model for the evaluation of ventricular volumes (22,23).The major potential advantages of strain and SR imaging for the assessment of the RV function are the independence of geometric assumptions and endocardial border tracing. In addition, both strain and SR images are feasible in the majority of patients (even in the presence of low-quality 2-D imaging), reproducible, and relatively load and rate independent (24)(25)(26). Both techniques also permit the quantification of the longitudinal systolic function for each RV segment separately.…”

“…Cut-off points of systolic strain and peak SR at the basal RVFW of 25% and −4 sec−1 have been previously suggested for a preserved global RV systolic function (RVEF≥50%) with sensitivities of 81% and 85% and specificities of 82% and 88%, respectively (25,26). In our study, the mean of the RVED index (158±47.8 cc/m 2 ) in CMR was also increased and the RVEF by CMR (38±8%) was reduced in most of our patients.…”
