Assessment of right ventricular function with Doppler echocardiographic indices derived from tricuspid annular motion: comparison with radionuclide angiography

Abstract: Objective: To assess right ventricular systolic function using indices derived from tricuspid annular motion, and to compare the results with right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) calculated from radionuclide angiography. Design: Pulsed Doppler echocardiography indices were obtained from 10 patients with a normal RVEF (group 1) and from 20 patients whose RVEF was less than 45% (group 2). Results: The patients in the two groups were similar in age, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate. There was a close… Show more

“…14,15 There has been a wide range of correlations between TAPSE and other measures of RV function. Good correlations were obtained comparing TAPSE with RVEF, [16][17][18][19][20] and better correlations were obtained comparing TAPSE with RV fractional area of change 6,12 and global RV strain. 21 Correlations were more modest when compared with RVEF using magnetic resonance imaging.…”

“…17 Studies, based on TDE S T measurements proved to be a valuable marker of RV function as compared with radionuclide methods. 8,9 Several studies demonstrated that measurements of TAPSE and S T can be useful for the diagnosis of RV infarction. 10,11 Three-dimensional analysis has been successfully used, but at present this approach is tedious and not accepted within clinical practice.…”

“…Tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) has proven to be a simple and reproducible marker of RV function which significantly correlates with the right ventricular ejection fraction assessed by first-pass radionuclide ventriculography and magnetic resonance imaging. 8,9 The usefulness of TDE in detecting RVMI has been previously documented. 10,11 As we know from studies on left ventricular infarction (e.g.…”

“…RV size measurement was taken in apical 4C sight basally between septum at the level of the tricuspid valve and RV anterior wall (basal diameter) at the end of diastole and systole. RV global systolic function was examined as the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) by the two dimensional difference of the end-diastolic and end-systolic lines located between the center of the ultrasound fan origin and the junction of the RV lateral tricuspid annulus in the apical 4C sight (9). The pulmonary acceleration time (PAcT) was measured using the pulse wave Doppler with the pulse wave sample volume placed within the RV outflow tract.…”
