Introduction:The fall while playing or while riding the bicycle is usually observed among children which results in injury to the supracondylar region of the humerus leading to fracture and complete displacement of the fragments in majority of the cases. This type of fracture is more commonly seen in children and contributes to 60% of all the elbow injuries. The most useful option for the treatment of supracondylar fractures is open reduction and internal fixation. The aim of the study was to study the results and complications of displaced supracondylar fracture among 30 children treated with open reduction and internal fixation using K wire.
Material and Methods:In this study, total 30 children who reported to the Department of Orthopaedics, Mamata General Hospital, Khammam were recorded. Those children who were below the age of 11 were selected irrespective of the sex including those with displaced supracondylar fracture of the humerus after thorough pre-operative investigation treated with open reduction and internal fixation with the use of K-wire were studied.Results: An excellent result was obtained in 54% of the patients, good in 30% and fair in 10% and poor results in 6% of the patients. The results were poor due to open fracture and in 1 case the patient reported very late to the hospital. Various complications were found such as nerve injuries, vascular injuries and infections which healed following short course of the treatment. 5 patients had cubitus varus and 2 patients had flexion loss on follow-up study.
Conclusion:Open reduction and internal fixation with K-wire is an easy, simple, inexpensive method, which gives excellent results and good outcome.
