Assessment of renal vascular resistance and blood pressure in dogs and cats with renal disease

Abstract: This study investigated the possible relationships between renal resistive index (RI) or pulsatility index (PI) and systolic blood pressure and biochemical and haematological parameters in dogs and cats with renal disease. The study included 50 dogs and 20 cats with renal disease. RI and PI were significantly higher in both dogs and cats with renal disease than in 27 healthy dogs and 10 healthy cats. In dogs, a significant negative correlation was found between RI and red blood cell count, and a positive corre… Show more

“…However, such techniques as CDFI do not depict vessels with a diameter of less than about 30 µm, and rely on the determination of the so-called resistance index (RI) in diagnosing kidney dysfunction [26]. The value of color and power Doppler sonography is still debatable because of its inherent limitations, such as a lack of sensitivity to slow flow and angle dependency.…”

“…In humans with acute renal failure, RI changes are seen more often than are changes on B‐mode scans or than elevations in serum creatinine concentration if damage is not severe 45 . The correlation between renal RI and acute renal failure is well‐established 26,46 . An elevation in renal RI indicates a bad prognosis 47–49 .…”

“…Mean RI values calculated in each kidney may assist in the diagnosis of obstructive unilateral pathologies [38][39][40][41] . The resistivity index and flow velocity in the right and left kidneys showed no alterations, probably due to the ability of renal autoregulation, which allows the maintenance of constant organ blood flow despite possible changes in existing infusion, treating initial compensatory responses without any neurohormonal influence.…”
