ObjectivesThe aim of this feasibility study was to prospectively explore in a dog model of chronic ischemic renal disease (CIRD) the hypothesis that real-time contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) can quantitatively evaluate the early perfusion changes of renal cortex.Materials and MethodsIn this animal care and use committee-approved study, the model of CIRD was carried out in healthy dogs (10.0∼12.0 kg, n = 5), by placing the Ameroid ring constrictors on the distal portion of right renal artery through operation. CEUS monitoring of right kidney perfusion was performed by intravenous bolus injection of 0.6 ml Sulfur hexafluoride filled microbubbles (SonoVue; Bracco S.P.A., Milan, Italy) every week after operation. The slope rate of ascending curve (A) and descending curve (α), area under curve (AUC), derived peak intensity (DPI), and time to peak (TTP) were measured in renal cortex using commercial quantification software (Q-LAB version 6; Philips Medical Systems, Bothell,WA,USA). The sensitivity of CEUS was compared with blood serum urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr) level.ResultsWith the progression of CIRD, dogs showed delayed enhancement and perfusion in renal CEUS curve. Earliest significant changes happened 4 weeks after operation on DPI and TTP which changed from 13.04±2.71 to 15.58±4.75 dB and 9.03±2.01 to 10.62±6.04 sec, respectively (P<.05).ConclusionsCEUS can display the perfusion changes of CIRD in the early period.

Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease with a worldwide distribution that can involve multiple organs and result in a wide variety of clinical manifestations. Our goal was to describe the sonographic changes occurring in 72 dogs naturally infected with babesiosis. Seven healthy Beagle dogs were used as a control group. The most common finding in all dogs was splenomegaly with a diffuse heterogenic parenchyma and generally reduced echogenicity. Diffuse hypoechoic hepatomegaly and bilaterally increased cortical echogenicity of the renal parenchyma were found more frequently in severe uncomplicated and complicated babesiosis groups. Mean renal resistive index and pulsatility index (PI) values were 0.66/1.35, 0.73/1.91, and 0.71/1.73 for mild uncomplicated, severe uncomplicated, and complicated babesiosis groups, respectively. A markedly increased PI for complicated and severe uncomplicated groups correlated with anemia and severity of renal damage. Ultrasonography can be an adjunct for diagnosis and monitoring canine babesiosis and its systemic complications. The detection of diffuse heterogeneous splenomegaly can support the diagnosis of Babesia infection, because of the high prevalence of this lesion in these patients.

Collared Pecary (tayassu tajacu) as a new model of renal ischemic injury induced by clamping the renal artery

PURPOSE:The use of the collared peccary as an experimental model for ischemic nephropathy. METHODS:A total of 12 collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) was used and ischemic nephropathy was induced in six of these animals that constituted the experimental group (G1) while the other six formed the control group (G2). Ischemic nephropathy was induced surgically by partial occlusion of the left renal artery. The disease course was assessed by hematological tests, serum chemistry, urinalysis, ultrasound (US) and doppler ultrasound function of the renal artery before induction, and at five, 10, 15 and 20 days after surgery.Twenty days after the occlusion, unilateral nephrectomy and histopathological examination were performed to assess renal morphology. RESULTS:Statistical analysis by Fischer's test showed a significant difference (p<0.05) between the control group and the experimental group. The histopathological examination showed glomerular, tubular and interstitial lesions. In the experimental group, 83.3% (5 /6) showed moderate renal lesions and only 16.7% (1/6) were classified with no lesions. The ultrasound examination of the right kidney presented statistical difference between day 5 and day 10 post occlusion. CONCLUSION:The collared peccary as a good experimental model for ischemic renal disease, because it could be manipulated during the research time without death, with health conditions that permit any subsequent procedure for disease therapy.Key words: Artiodactyla.
