Assessment of profilin as an allergen for latex‐sensitized patients

Abstract: It seems that profilin is a relevant allergen for both groups of patients from a frequency point of view, but with scarce presence in natural latex extracts and raw sources, with a subsequent low IgE induction capacity.

“…Nieto et al [37] reported 42% of sensitization to natural and recombinant Hev b 8 as assessed by EAST (6/17 spina bifida patients and 7/14 other latex-allergic patients, 9 of whom were healthcare workers). Rihs et al [38] reported lower prevalences, with 12% of spina bifida patients and 20% of healthcare workers presenting IgE antibodies to rHev b 8 on ImmunoCAP and immunoblot.…”

“…The most likely explanation for these false-positive results should probably be sought in terms of stimulation concentrations. This phenomenon has already been described for other allergens such as Hevea latex [43,][44]. Moreover, it seems justified to state that sensitization to profilin could also account for the false-positive sIgE cannabis results observed in 1 out of 3 plant food-allergic CSA - patients.…”

“…Nevertheless, clinical relevance of IgE binding to profilin has to be distinguished from cross‐reactive IgE binding without evoking allergic symptoms. Profilin as a relevant allergen has been described in recent studies for patients sensitized to latex, banana, pineapple, melon, hazelnut, celery, carrot, and peach [21, 26–32], and bell pepper was reported to cause clinical food allergy supporting possible clinical relevance of anti‐profilin IgE in selected cases [33].…”
