Assessment of pollution profile in Buyukcekmece Watershed, Turkey

Abstract: Buyukcekmece Lake located north of the Marmara Sea coast of Turkey is the third largest water resources among the six main reservoirs of a megacity Istanbul, providing 17% water demand. This study aims to investigate the water quality changes in Buyukcekmece Lake and to classify it in accordance to Turkish Water Pollution Control Regulation for inland surface waters, and assess the impacts of the land-use practices, population density, and settlement in the Buyukcekmece watershed. Physical, chemical, and biolo… Show more

“…As this area is under risk due to farmland, industrial activities and increase in population, it has to be kept under supervision. Although there are researches on the water quality and phytoplankton of Büyükçekmece Lake [11,12], the phytoplankton and water quality of the streams emptying into to Büyükçekmece Watershed have not been researched yet. In this study, the purpose was to specify the phytoplankton diversity and certain physicochemical parameters of Büyükçekmece Lake and the streams feeding the lake, e.g.…”

“…In Buyukcekmece Lake, the third largest water source in Turkey, a remarkable portion of the pollution in the watershed has been attributed to domestic wastewater discharges, and agricultural areas that occupy more than half of the watershed have also adversely affected the water quality [10]. Herbicide concentrations in the lake water were thought to reflect agricultural cultivation of the watershed [11].…”
