Assessment of plasma aminothiol levels and the association with recurrent atherothrombotic events in patients hospitalized for an acute coronary syndrome: a prospective study

Abstract: Although homocysteine is generally considered the aminothiol of interest with respect to cardiovascular disease, in our prospective study, only cysteine and glutathione appeared independently associated with recurrent atherothrombotic events. Moreover, we showed that an imbalance in the combination of aminothiols could be of more importance than investigating the individual metabolites.

“… 29 , 30 This may be because cysteine is independently maintained from homocysteine and represents a more abundant and reactive aminothiol that on oxidation forms cystine, which is 30 times more abundant than homocysteine and perhaps is a more pathological component. Although some studies have shown association between total cysteine and CVD, 31 , 32 none until now has examined the individual oxidized and reduced components or their respective contribution to the oxidant burden. These data may thus offer a partial explanation for the failure of homocysteine targeted therapy and possible new treatment opportunities.…”

“…Two prospective studies investigated whether GSH predicts CVD. GSH appeared independently and inversely associated with recurrent atherothrombotic events in a cohort of 375 survivors admitted for an ACS, followed for a median duration of 2.7 years (108). Similarly, in a sample from the Hunter Community Study free of CVEs, 5-year absolute cardiovascular risk score calculated using the Framingham Risk Equation was independently and inversely associated to plasma GSH levels (220).…”
