Assessment of Physical Activity by Accelerometer and IPAQ-Short Version in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis

Abstract: Aim: To compare the short version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the accelerometer measurement of physical activity (PA) in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: Sample consisted of 40 patients (19 men) aged 45 ± 16 years. Patients reported their PA using the IPAQ during a face-to-face interview, and wore an Actigraph GT3-X accelerometer for 1 week to obtain minutes per day of light PA, moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and total PA as well as raw counts per day (vector magnitude… Show more

“…This may cause subjective findings in reporting the subjects' activity level. Results in the previous study also found that IPAQ may underestimate light physical activity [31]. This also may contribute to the difference in our results.…”

“…The IPAQ short form is a simple and quick self-reported questionnaire to assess subjects' physical activity. A study comparing IPAQ and accelerometer had moderate correlations among patients undergoing hemodialysis [31]. Another study comparing IPAQ and pedometer in CKD patients also found a modest correlation between both measurements [32].…”

“…Although the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in China is 10.8%, there is no questionnaire specifically designed for dialysis patients in China. Indeed, IPAQ has only been tested in dialysis patients in England [15]. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study aimed at testing the reliability and validity of IPAQ-C that recruited large numbers of patients in multiple centers.…”

“…Although the IPAQ questionnaire has been extensively tested in the general population, it is rarely tested in patients receiving hemodialysis. In 2015, Rosa et al confirmed the validity of the questionnaire in hemodialysis patients in English-speaking countries [15]. However, previous studies [14,16] have shown that cultural and language differences can affect the accuracy of the results when questionnaire language is altered.…”

“…O estudo apresenta limitações que devem ser consideradas. Apesar do IPAQ ser uma ferramenta válida e confiável [12][13][14][15][16] , e comumente usada em estudos com nefropatas [17][18][19][20] , não foi realizado nenhum teste ou exame para se inferir quantitativamente a capacidade aeróbica ou funcional dos pacientes, como ergoespirometria…”
