Assessment of Photosynthetic Pigment and Water Contents in Intact Sunflower Plants from Spectral Indices

Abstract: Under water-limited conditions, monitoring water and chlorophyll status is essential to avoid restrictions in crop growth and yield. This study was carried out to assess water and chlorophyll contents from spectral indices in sunflower plants. The hybrid Sunbright Supreme was cultivated inside a non-acclimatized greenhouse until the start of the flowering stage, and later was maintained in a growth chamber with the purpose of submitting the plants to a slow and progressive dehydration rate for 12 consecutive d… Show more

“…As demonstrated by Peñuelas and Inoue 32 , when evaluating reflectance indices associated with water and pigment contents of peanut and wheat leaves, WI closely track changes in LRWC, but it is frequently influenced by architectural canopy parameters. Similar results were obtained by Steidle Neto et al 50 , when assessing water and chlorophyll contents from spectral indices in sunflower plants under drought conditions. WI is effective to represent changes also in sunflower water content.…”

“…The relative greenness decreased due to stress and average decline of -3.88rg was noted under stress environment (Table 7). Present findings are in consonance with those of Antonio et al (2017) who perceived that water stress induced a decline in the chlorophyll contents, resulting in linear and nonlinear decreases in chlorophyll content index also.…”

“…Developments in hyperspectral RS have provided new VIs or indicators of plant biochemical and biophysical properties. Most of the studies involving the novel spectral VIs have been conducted at the leaf or canopy level and often are focused on mitigating unwanted reflectance effects, while increasing the indices' sensitivity to the investigated parameters [6,7].…”
