Assessment of peripheral blood flow using a pulse oximeter

Abstract: We investigated the bar graph on a pulse oximeter as an indicator of peripheral blood flow. Because blood flow is known to increase in the lower extremities during spinal analgesia, we chose patients receiving spinal analgesia as the experimental model. Although they are indirect indicators, we used laser Doppler readings and skin temperature to reflect peripheral blood flow. These measurements were made from each patient's foot and hand before and after spinal analgesia and were compared with the deflection o… Show more

“…When using PI to confirm the efficacy of a SGB, some factors should be taken into consideration. First, because body movements cause changes in the pulse oximetry AC/DC signal ratio22,23 before and after SGB the body posture of the patient should not be changed. The influence of the redistribution of body fluids, or changes in the way the sensor is positioned may affect the measurement of PI.…”

“…The influence of the redistribution of body fluids, or changes in the way the sensor is positioned may affect the measurement of PI. Additionally, applying pressure to the sensor may cause changes in blood flow in the skin microcirculation,22–25 and therefore, should be avoided. In conclusion, we found that continuous measurements of the PI using a pulse oximeter could be useful for determining the efficacy of SGB.…”

“…11 ± 12 One of the limitations of physiologic investigation of female genital sexual arousal is quantitative assessment of the arousal response. Recent advances in the measurement of hemoglobin by laser oximetry 13 have facilitated quantitation of changes in blood¯ow in female genital (vaginal, labial, clitoral) tissues. We have employed this technology, along with laser Doppler¯owmetry, to assess the effect of pelvic nerve stimulation on genital tissue engorgement.…”

“…Vegfors et al 31 reported that spinal anesthesia increased the blood flow of the foot, confirmed by Doppler flowmetry. It resulted in increased pulse oximeter signal, amplitude, with increased temperature.…”
