We have previously suggested that a preventive program for periodontal disease should be introduced in the school dental health care system (15), In 1988, the Ministry of Health and Welfare in Japan agreed upon a national program for reduction of periodontal disease. The goals of that program have been defined as follows: 1) to motivate dentists and the public to prevention of periodontal disease during childhood; 2) to change from a dental health care attitude which attaches more importance to treatment of disease to a dental and periodontal health eare attitude and action whieh emphasizes prevention; 3) to introduce regular dental and periodontal examinations and oral health guidance for adults in each community or at the place of employment; 4) to develop plans for prevention of periodontal disease by means of improved meehanical oral hygiene measures or, if proven effective, by specific drugs that may become available in the future.…”
