Assessment of Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni in Water and Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) Plant from Woji Creek, Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract: This study evaluates the levels of Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni and the potential ability of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) plant to bioaccumulate these metals in Woji Creek, Rivers State, Nigeria by collecting water and water hyacinth samples along a 1.3 km stretch of the creek between 2018 and 2019 for analysis. Water samples and plants were collected from five stations across the creek from June to October of both years. The trend of metal concentration in the surface water is Pb > Cr > Ni > Cd in 2018… Show more

“…The creek serves as a route of transportation into the city by water transport through the Bright of Bonny into the City of Port Harcourt. For this reason, boats and barges are manufactured and maintained at several points along the creek, therefore creating a potential for pollution due to these anthropogenic activities ( Dibofori- Orji et al., 2019 ; Ibezim-Ezeani and Ihunwo, 2020 ). Fishing is also a major use of the creek by local communities.…”

“…Water hyacinth (a member of the family Pontederiaceae) is a hyperaccumulator plant species having a distinct capacity to absorb various heavy metals from the contaminated sites (Ibezim-Ezeani et al 2020). It grows in the local water bodies, lakes, rivers, dominated by high nitrogen, phosphorus, mineral, and heavy metals.…”

“…[ 6–9 ] Many of these contaminants play a vital role in biological processes such as the enzymatic activity glyoxalase‐I and urease for nitrogen metabolism; however, large quantities cause damage to DNA, creating mutagenic effects in both plants and animals. [ 10,11 ] Nickel in particular is the second most absorbed metal in plant roots and third in shoots, indicating readily available uptake capabilities of plants. [ 10 ] Here, amino acids such as histidine regulate Ni 2+ uptake and act as chelators in the form of complexes.…”

[ 10 ] Here, amino acids such as histidine regulate Ni 2+ uptake and act as chelators in the form of complexes. Initial uptake of Ni–H 2 O complexes by root systems gives way to Ni‐amino acid multiplexes during natural biological processes.…”
