Assessment of patient's peak skin dose during abdominopelvic embolization using radiochromic (Gafchromic) films

Abstract: Dosimetry using radiochromic film is only appropriate for HCE, AEE and AUE, whereas dose-mapping systems present a more suitable solution for all embolizations including those with AK that occasionally exceed 2Gy.

“…These results are in agreement with a previous work [51], based on a large number of Monte Carlo simulations, which highlights a variation of about 20%. In the clinical procedures, the primary and the secondary angles are often changed; to consider these variations in the algorithm, for all irradiation events the table attenuation factor (calculated by the physicist for each device) is adjusted for the beam angle, as described in (3). The correction used turns out to be in agreement with experimental data, as shown in Fig.…”

“…The GafChromic® XR-RV3 films have been widely used to estimate skin doses during interventional procedures [23][24][25][26][27].A calibration curve is necessary to evaluate the response of the GafChromic® XR-RV3 film as a function of film exposure since their response is not linear with the dose. As reported in the literature [45], the beam quality choice for the calibration is a key point when additional filtration and kVp are automatically controlled.…”

“…11 Since this dosimetric method is a relative one, the proper calibration curve needs to be determined prior to its use for dose assessment. 2,3,4,[10][11][12][13][14] In the literature there is still an insufficient number of detailed descriptions of the calibration curve fitting analysis for XR-RV3 films. Due to the relatively low dose rate of ionizing radiation of X-ray units used in interventional radiology compared to radiotherapeutic units, this process performed in clinical conditions is somewhat time-consuming.…”
