Assessment of Partial Resistance to Powdery Mildew (Podosphaera pannosa) in a Tetraploid Rose Population Using a Spore-suspension Inoculation Method

Abstract: Powdery mildew (Podosphaera pannosa) is the most important fungal disease in greenhouse roses and is in practice controlled by fungicides. The creation of novel cultivars with durable resistance to powdery mildew is highly desirable. To understand the inheritance of mildew resistance, a tetraploid rose population with a size of 181 seedlings was obtained by crossing two tetraploid genotypes each having partial resistance. The population and its parents were tested under greenhouse conditions with two well-defi… Show more

“…On the other hand, gene(s) conferring resistance to powdery mildew can vary considerably, from single dominant (Paris and Cohen 2002) or recessive (Ek et al 2005) gene to oligogenes (Foulongne et al 2003;Roderick and Jones 1991;Tiwari et al 1997). However, for adult plants or durable resistance, which is most desirable for breeding, is quite often reported as a quantitative trait(s) and is partial in nature (Jakobson et al 2006;Linde et al 2006;Yan et al 2006).…”

“…Quantitative differences for powdery mildew infection on a family mean basis has also been shown (Leus 2005). Yan et al (2006) used a liquid spore suspension inoculation method with two characterized isolates to show quantitative control of partial resistance to powdery mildew. Resistance to spot anthracnose (Sphaceloma rosarum (Pass.)…”

“…Association study between NBS profiling markers and the powdery mildew resistance data that Yan (2005) and Yan et al (2006) obtained by testing the K5 population against two monospore isolates of Podosphaera pannosa (2 and F1) was performed in a similar way as described by Yan (2005). The analyses comprises at first running single-marker ANOVAs to identify markers probably associated with powdery mildew resistance.…”

“…A preliminary association study between data on powdery mildew resistance from Yan et al (2006), the markers they generated, and NBS profiling markers was performed, starting with single-marker ANOVAs. This was done to select markers possibly associated with resistance to isolate F1.…”
