Assessment of optic nerve vascularity in healthy eyes using superb microvascular imaging: a preliminary study

Abstract: Background Changes in optic nerve vascularity are observed in many diseases. Superb microvascular imaging (SMI) has the potential to become the method of choice for detecting microvasculature in the optic nerves. Purpose To evaluate optic nerve vascularity in healthy individuals through power Doppler sonography (PDUS) and SMI. Material and Methods Twenty-seven healthy patients with 54 eyes were prospectively evaluated. The duration of the examination for optic nerve vascularity lasted until the posterior cilia… Show more

“…A larger sample size in different stages is required for further studies. Third, SMI is currently only used in ophthalmology for blood flow detection, such as retinoblastoma and optic nerve papilla [ 19 ], but has not been used in DR. SMI performs better in the clinical application of neovascularization compared with traditional ultrasound technology [ 30 , 31 ], which makes its results more reliable. SMI should be evaluated more and considered for widespread application in ophthalmology.…”

“…The retrobulbar blood vessels were detected using the Aplio i900 (Canon Medical Systems Corporation, Otawara, Touching, Japan) with a high-frequency linear probe [ 19 ]. All SMI examinations were performed by the same experienced sonographer (Anglia) to ensure repeatability [ 20 ].…”

“…A larger sample size in different stages is required for further studies. Third, SMI is currently only used in ophthalmology for blood ow detection, such as retinoblastoma and optic nerve papilla (21) , but has not been used in DR. Based on CDFI, the algorithm of SMI has been updated to improve the accuracy of retrobulbar hemodynamics. For me, I am more con dent in the accuracy of SMI and should consider promoting its use in ophthalmology.…”
