Assessment of Operational Performance for an Integrated ‘Power to Synthetic Natural Gas’ System

Abstract: This article presents a power to SNG (synthetic natural gas) system that converts hydrogen into SNG via a methanation process. In our analysis, detailed models for all the elements of the system are built. We assume a direct connection between a wind farm and a hydrogen generator. For the purposes of our calculations, we also assume that the hydrogen generator is powered by the renewable source over a nine-hour period per day (between 21:00 and 06:00), and this corresponds to the off-peak period in energy dema… Show more

“…Fuels obtained from power energy, the so-called "electric fuels" (E-Fuels), can be considered as green fuels since they are produced from green hydrogen. These E-fuels include power-to-liquids (PtL) and power-to-gas (PtG) fuels, together known as PtX fuels, and can be considered as a major stake in the future production of green H 2 [1,[25][26][27][28][29]. In this sense, E-fuels are gaining a lot of importance since they allow for taking advantage of the enormous internal combustion engine fleet existing worldwide, that currently comprises around 99% of the global light-duty vehicles, ocean transport and aviation [1].…”

“…RES installations, such as wind turbines and solar panels, are characterized by a variation in the amount of electricity produced mainly due to their dependence on the current weather conditions [4,5]. Additionally, there are changes in power demand in the power grid related to the variable activity of electricity consumers during a day [6].…”
