Scavengers were the one of the informal workers who work in the landfill. Scavengers have a high risk of having work accidents. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of work accidents and factors related to work accidents among scavengers at the Sumompo landfill Manado city. This was a correlational analytic research with a cross-sectional approach. This research was conducted at the Sumompo landfill Manado city in January-February 2021. The respondents in this research were 110 scavengers. The research variables consisted of the independent variable (knowledge of personal protective equipment/ PPE, the action to use of PPE and the work time period) and the dependent variable (work accidents). The data obtained were analyzed by univariate and bivariate. The results of this research showed that the respondents are most widely distributed on good knowledge (56.4%), bad actions (60%), long work time period (74.5%) and have work accidents (73.6%). The results of the bivariate analysis showed that the action of using PPE was correlated to work accidents (p = 0.024). The results of the analysis show that scavengers who have bad actions to use PPE are more at risk of having work accidents when compared to scavengers who have good actions to use PPE. That can be concluded that the prevalence of work accidents in scavengers is 73.6% and the action of using PPE was a factor associated with work accidents.

Scavengers are prone to various health problems, hence seeking healthcare is inevitable. Despite the importance of the help-seeking behavior of scavengers, it has not been addressed explicitly in the existing literature. Addressing this gap, this study intends to explore the help-seeking behavior of scavengers and to identify the factors that influence healthcare utilization among them. This qualitative study conducted thirty-one in-depth interviews through a semi-structured interview guide and analyzed them using thematic analysis. Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Service Use was employed to explore the findings. The findings showed that the scavengers utilized multiple healthcare options depending on the severity and reoccurrence of the illness. The process of help-seeking and health services utilization was largely influenced by the cost of the health service, long distance to the health facility, traveling cost and waiting time. The study highlights the need for scavengers’ enrolment in micro health insurance schemes. The initiative would facilitate scavengers’ access to medical care. Health awareness campaigns and the provision of free mobile medical services, especially at the landfill sites, would also improve curative treatment among scavengers.

Introduction: Both hepatic parenchymal and renal cells are rich in enzymes required for the biotransformation of various exogenous substances, a process that sometimes may result in organ damage. Contact with solid waste will undoubtedly result in high degree of exposure to various harmful substances. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of solid waste scavenging on hepato-renal function. Material and Methods: Twenty-nine solid waste scavengers and 30 subjects who served as control were used for the study. Serum obtained from 5 mL of blood was utilized to assess hepatic (alanine & aspartate aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, albumin, total protein, γ-globulins) and renal (urea, creatinine) functions of each participant. Standard photometric methods were used for all estimations. Data were analyzed using Student’s t-test and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. P ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Results and Discussion: Significant differences were observed for globulins and total proteins in solid waste scavengers compared with control (p<0.05) while other parameters (alanine & aspartate aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, urea) were not significantly different (p>0.05). There was total non-compliance to the use of personal protective equipment. Results of the study revealed that hepatic and renal markers were not significantly different but γ-globulins were significantly higher in solid waste scavengers compared with control group. Conclusion: Solid waste scavenging in Osogbo is not associated with hepatorenal alteration except that γ-globulin fraction was elevated.
