Assessment of occupational exposure to welding fumes by inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectroscopy and by the alkaline Comet assay

Abstract: Welding fumes are classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. In the current study, blood and urine concentrations of aluminum (Al), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were monitored by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in 30 welders and in 22 controls. In addition, DNA damage was examined in the lymphocytes of these subjects by the alkaline Comet assay. Two biologic… Show more

“…A minimum of 50 cells were scored for each sample at 400× magnification. The distance between the edge of the head and the end of the tail was measured using an automated image analysis system (Optimas 6.51, Media Cybernetics Inc., Silver Spring, Md) [55,56]. …”

“…Investigations of the impurity atom effect on the functioning of biological objects are currently of great interest 1–3 because they allow to estimate the stability of biological objects under persistent influence of impurity atoms.…”

“…A nonlinear regression analysis was performed on the normalized distribution frequencies using a v 2 function with TableCurve 2D. The calculated degree of freedom (n) for the function, named OTM v 2 , was assumed to be a quantitative measure of the level of DNA damage in the sample [Bauer et al, 1998;Botta et al, 2006]. The induction activity (IA) was calculated by nonlinear regression analysis with TableCurve 2D using an arbitrary model.…”
