Introduction: Measurement of the diameter of the portal vein may be particularly important in detecting and evaluating patients with portal hypertension as well as some other clinical disorders.This study is aimed at determining the mean portal vein diameter based on age, gender and anthropometric variables. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on a total of 195 apparently healthy individuals with overnight fasting and normal ultrasonographic findings of the liver. Portal vein diameter was measured and correlated with age, height, weight and BMI of the participants. Results: The mean portal vein diameter was 9.57 ± 0.66mm for both sexes. The mean value for males was 9.71 ± 0.67mm, and 9.46±0.64mm among females. There was a positive correlation between the PV diameter and age, height, weight and body mass index (P≤ 0.05). Conclusion: The measurement of the portal vein diameter using sonography is an important cornerstone for diagnosing patients with portal hypertension and also has a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Background: Chronic liver diseases cause portal hypertension resulting in portal vein enlargement. Vascular compression syndromes and the status of hydration of the body are determined by vein diameters. Objective: It is aimed to provide normative values of the major intraabdominal portal and systemic vein diameters in several age groups of children on contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography. Materials and Methods: 800 pediatric patients (468 male, 332 female) who were referred to the Radiology Department of our institution were enrolled. Age groups included 0-2, 3-5, 5-10, 10-15, and 15-18 years of life. The largest diameter of the major portal vein, right and left portal vein branches, superior mesenteric and splenic veins, right and left renal vein and vena cava inferior were measured. The ratios were also calculated right to left portal vein, right to the left renal vein and portal vein to vena cava inferior for age groups. Descriptive statistics of the data were expressed as means with standard deviation. The percentiles of vein diameters were calculated for all age groups. Differences in mean diameters among ages were compared with the ANOVA test. Differences among gender groups were analysed with independent samples t-test. Results: No statistically significant difference was found among gender groups (p:0.6). There have been statistically significant differences in mean diameters among consecutive age groups (p:0.001) for splanchnic and renal venous system and also vena cava. There has been a statistically significant positive correlation (p:0.001; r:0.5-0.79) of diameters with ages. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean ratios of vein diameters by age groups. Conclusions: Intraabdominal major vein diameters were not affected by gender. We provided a diameter range for several age groups. Age would be a reliable parameter to predict the diameters of major veins.

Background: Periportal fibrosis is a late-stage manifestation of chronic infection with Schistosoma mansoni. Praziquantel (PZQ), the only drug available for the treatment of schistosomiasis, has limited effect in treating established morbidity. Preschool-aged children (PSAC) are not considered to be an at-risk population for severe morbidity. However, the prevalence of periportal fibrosis in PSAC in S. mansoni endemic settings is unknown. Methods: As part of a phase II clinical trial comparing different dosing regimens of PZQ in children age 12–47 months infected with S. mansoni in Uganda (“praziquantel in preschoolers” trial), we present baseline results assessing liver ultrasound (US) findings as per the WHO Niamey Protocol. Results: A total of 7/347 (2%) PSAC had Image Pattern C with pipe stems and echogenic rings suggestive of periportal fibrosis, 29/347 (8%) had Image Pattern B and 58 (17%) had evidence of periportal thickening There were higher adjusted odds of periportal thickening with older age [odds ratio (OR): 1.04; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00–1.07], primary maternal education (OR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.00–1.07) and being taken to the lake weekly (OR: 3.02; 95% CI: 1.19–7.63). A further 44/347 children (13%) had a rounded caudal liver edge which was associated with high S. mansoni infection intensity (adjusted OR: 3.31; 95% CI: 1.46–7.51). Conclusions: Incipient schistosomiasis-related liver morbidity was detected in young children enrolled in the praziquantel in preschoolers trial. Adequate age-adjusted reference measurements for liver ultrasound findings in very small children are lacking but urgently needed. Schistosomiasis-related fibrosis may be delayed or averted with early and repeated PZQ treatment.
