BackgroundPoor sleep quality is linked to physiological dysfunction, which increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and other medical conditions. Despite the known health risks of sleep disturbances, literature is still scant regarding sleep quality and its associated factors among healthcare professionals in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its associated factors among healthcare professionals at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.MethodsAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. A total of 418 healthcare professionals participated in the study. The study participants were chosen using the stratified random sampling method. Data were collected using a structured, self-administered questionnaire. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep quality of participants. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression models were used. p ≤ 0.05 was used to declare statistically significant variables.ResultsThe mean age of the study participants was 30.7 years (SD ± 6.3). The overall prevalence of poor sleep quality was 58.9% [95% CI (54.2, 63.6%)]. Being female [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.9, 95% CI (1.2, 2.9)], being a shift worker [AOR = 5.7, 95% CI (2.3, 14.3), not performing regular exercise [AOR = 2.08 (1.2–3.6)], being a khat chewer [AOR = 3.1, 95% CI (1.2, 7.6)], and having depressive symptoms [AOR = 2.6, 95% CI (1.3, 6.8)] were significantly associated with higher odds of having poor sleep quality.ConclusionThe prevalence of poor sleep quality among healthcare professionals was found to be high. As a result, we recommend that healthcare providers at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital focus on early regular screening for sleep disturbances and pay special attention to shift work schedules and behaviors such as khat chewing, exercise, and depressive symptoms.

BackgroundThe sleep quality of nurses affects both their health and standard of nursing care. Working conditions, depression, and coping potential can also lead to sleep problems.IntroductionSleep plays a crucial role in overall health at every stage of life. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of sleep quality, depression, and coping mechanisms on the performance of nurses, whose sleep quality is strongly affected due to shift‐based work.MethodsThe sample of this descriptive correlational study consisted of 133 healthcare workers. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Coping Response Inventory (CRI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and evaluated using the t test, Mann–Whitney U test, one‐way ANOVA, Enter method, and linear regression.FindingsOne in three nurses reported having poor‐quality sleep, and one in two nurses said they felt sleepy during the day. With declining sleep quality, the nurses' ability to cope with stress diminished, and their degree of depression increased.DiscussionThe nurses' financial situation and level of depression were key factors that influenced their quality of sleep and capacity to handle stress. To improve nurses' sleep, the shift pattern needs to change.ConclusionTo increase the quantity of sleep and enhance mental health, changes should be made to the shift schedules of nurses to allow for appropriate rest and reduce daytime sleepiness.Implications for nursing practice and policiesImproved working conditions for nurses and updated nursing standards are required to improve nurses health and wellbeng.

Nurses who work shifts are professionals, but we don't know much about the conditions and feelings of nurses after becoming nurses. The purpose of the research was to explore the experience of being a shift nurse in implementing shift work schedules and fatigue. Method: The research used a qualitative design with phenomenological approach. The research was conducted in two hospitals used purposive sampling techniques according to predetermined inclusion criteria. The participants were 19 nurses and conducted in-depth interviews . The collected data was subjected to thematic analysis. Results: There were five themes obtained from this research including 1) Shift nurses experience work fatigue which causes their career development opportunities to be reduced; 2) Accompanying doctor visits, workload, number and condition of patients, extended working time due to handovers are the causes of shift nurse fatigue; 3) Nurses experience the risk of SWD and the risk of making human errors while on duty; 4) Changing nurse service schedules and non-ideal service patterns managed by the head of the room risk reducing satisfaction with the service schedule; 5) Shift nurse job satisfaction tends to be low but nurses remain responsible and prioritize working professionally. Conclusion: This research can be concluded that nurses have unique experiences in managing nurse schedule and the impact of fatigue from working as a shift nurse. Nurses are expected to be able to understand which conditions constitute tiring work, and if it is not the nurse's main duties and responsibilities, they can report it to their superiors.
