Selection pressures underpinning the evolution of mammalian sociality and body mass variation have spurred great interest for several decades. Because they inhabit a wide range of geographic localities and habitats, African mole-rat subspecies of Cryptomys hottentotus present a unique opportunity to further our understanding of intra- and interspecific variation of sociality and body mass in mammalian species. We compared the demographics and body masses among 4 C. hottentotus subspecies: the Mahali mole-rat, C. h. mahali; highveld mole-rat, C. h. pretoriae; Natal mole-rat, C. h. natalensis; and common mole-rat, C. h. hottentotus within the context of their respective microclimates and evolutionary history. We propose that all ancestral C. hottentotus subspecies were arid-adapted and thus formed large colonies (as found today in the Mahali mole-rat). However, as the subspecies dispersed to occupy habitats of varying aridity and temperature across South Africa, selection for a particular colony size range in each subspecies arose to provide an adaptive fitness benefit to survive in its habitat. Consequently, the Mahali mole-rat—which remained in a warm and arid environment—retained the largest mean colony size, followed by the Natal mole-rat, which—even though inhabiting a hyper-mesic environment—selected for increased colony sizes to offset the energy requirement of thermoregulation (through huddling) in the cooler montane environments they prefer. The common mole-rat and the highveld mole-rat possessed the smallest mean colony sizes, likely the result of inhabiting a mesic and warm environment. At the same time, body mass variation in the C. hottentotus complex is likely linked to colony size variation, with subspecies having the largest colonies possessing the lowest individual body mass.

Increasing production and productivity of agriculture in general and root and tuber crops in particular require a strong linkage between the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. The growing in agriculture sector does not occur without non-agricultural sectors. The major root and tuber crops production and productivity in South Omo Zone, Southern Ethiopia is very low in relation to the land coverage under the crops, due to poor and under recommended rate of improved agricultural technology utilization and low skill of management and related practices by the producers. To solve these root and tuber related problems and increase the production and productivity of the crops, strong and result based farmers training centers and interlinked research extension system are important and strongly interconnected . This study was conducted in five districts of South Omo Zone namely Debub Ari from agricultural based, Malle and Bena-Tsemay from agro-pastoral, Hammer, and Dasenech from pastoral. The districts are selected purposively based on root and tuber crop production potential. The result shows that the area coverage, production and productivity of the major root and tuber crops decreases from time to time and their diseases and pests increases thoroughly. Farmers in the study area should use disease resistance varieties and the production inputs at a recommended rate and time. The major root and tuber crops that are grown in the study area are sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), potato (Solanum tuberosum), cassava (Manihot esculenta), taro (Colocasia esculenta), and enset (Ensete ventricosum).

The majority of communities in different regions of Ethiopia are relying on a variety of plants to improve the quality of their dairy products. However, this cultural perception was scientifically not well strengthened. Therefore, the objectives of the study were to identify milk preservative plants and evaluate the effects of preservative plants on fermented milk redox potential, Potential hydrogen (pH), and sensory analysis. The survey study was conducted on purposefully selected 80 households in the Haramaya district. However, the laboratory study was conducted on four top-ranked plants for the preparation of fermented milk samples at ambient temperature following similar techniques and procedures observed at households. All the collected data were analysed by Statitsical Analysis software (SAS). In the study area, five plants in the families of Oleaceae, Celastraceae, Lamiaceae, and Rutaceae were identified and used by the majority of respondents with perceptions of enhancing the flavour of their products. The Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results of redox potential were proved the cultural perception of the majority of respondents that they were used both Olea Africana and Catha edulis in substitute to each other for the same purpose. The pH of all treatments was continuously decreased and the milk samples treated by Olea Africana and Catha edulis were recorded the lowest values at the end. The observed pH results have disproved the communities cultural perceptions that they believed smoking increased the shelf life and extended the fermentation time whereas the Hedonic scores of panelists proved the local perceptions of respondents that they were mainly intended to make their products much more acceptable and preferable by its flavour to the consumers.
