Assessment of Microstressors in Adults: Questionnaire Development and Ecological Validation of the Mainz Inventory of Microstressors

Abstract: Background Many existing scales for microstressor assessment do not differentiate between objective (ie, observable) stressor events and stressful cognitions or concerns. They often mix items assessing objective stressor events with items measuring other aspects of stress, such as perceived stressor severity, the evoked stress reaction, or further consequences on health, which may result in spurious associations in studies that include other questionnaires that measure such constructs. Most scales … Show more

“…However, as we were specifically interested in studying how control experience may moderate stress effects, reducing stress exposure in EC was not an option. Stress constitutes a pervasive fact of life [ 27 , 28 ] from which it is hard to escape. This rings true, especially in today’s society, where we are increasingly expected to multitask, show proficiency in a variety of subjects, and to shoulder ever more responsibility.…”

“…At each signal, an EMA version of the Mainz Inventory of Microstressors (MIMIS; Chmitorz et al, 2020) was administered. The MIMIS comprised 58 potential daily hassles covering relevant aspects of daily life (e.g., work, family, friends, monetary aspects as well as environmental and living conditions; see the for a complete display of the MIMIS).…”

“…Adversity can occur both in the form of chronic, long-lasting, and systemic stressors (such as ongoing abuse), or in the form of acute stressors, (including isolated events such as personal loss or changes in life conditions; Pangallo et al, 2015). Furthermore, adversity may refer both to severe and traumatic life events but also to more common and less disruptive stressors such as daily hassles (Fletcher and Sarkar, 2013;Chmitorz et al, 2020).…”
