Assessment of Metallic Content, Pollution, and Sources of Road Dust in the City of Białystok (Poland)

Abstract: This study used flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) to determine the metallic content in 69 samples of street dust collected in various environments (viz., streets with heavy traffic, streets in residential neighborhoods, and streets near green areas and parks) of Białystok, Poland, during 2018. In descending order of average concentration, the measured metals were Fe (2,335 mg kg −1 ), Zn (68.99 mg kg −1 ), Mn (68.62 mg kg −1 ), Cu (16.37 mg kg −1 ), Pb (11.42 mg kg −1 ), Cr (9.12 mg kg −1 ), and Ni (… Show more

“…According to Gordon [ 11 ], the sources of K are highly linked to wood combustion, soils, incinerators, and lime kilns. Zn and Mn elements indicate that the source could be from metal industries [ 50 , 51 ]. Elements such as Ca, Ti, Fe, and Mn are classified as crustal elements and are characterized by resuspended dust particles related to traffic and unpaved roads [ 38 ].…”

“…2018 and Łapiński et.al. 2020 [32][33], higher Cd concentrations in the dust were related to tire wear and lubricating oil and automobile emissions. One of the sources of Cd is engine wear and emissions from diesel fuel [34 ].…”

“…The heavy metals may be influenced by the same source, based on high PL value [22]. A modest loading value suggests that the heavy metals may be impacted by a variety of sources [33].…”

“…Therefore, it should be assumed that the pollutants came from several common sources [38,49], but the emissions had a similar qualitative composition. Most likely, these are emissions related to road transport [52][53][54] and agricultural activities [55,56]. In 2016, the correlation coefficients changed significantly in some cases, but they are still strong or moderate except for the Ni/Pb, Ni/pH and Pb/pH pairs.…”
