Assessment of material use in relation to climate in historical buildings

Abstract: Climate is among the most significant factors on the environmental performance, life span and/or durability of construction materials in buildings. Although some historical buildings have been abandoned and neglected for a very long period, their existence through centuries can be explained because of their durability to climatic conditions of the area where they are situated. In this study, construction techniques and characteristics of building materials used in some madrasas (historical education buildings)… Show more

“…Abiotic parameters are the main factors that helps in weakening the polymeric structure of the plastics (Helbling et al, 2006;Ipekoglu et al, 2007) and also behave as a synergistic factor by initiating the biodeterioration process (Jakubowicz et al, 2006).This process is triggered by the formation of biofilm over the surface of plastic. The formation of biofilm depends upon the chemical composition and physical structure of the plastic as well as on the prevailing environmental conditions (Lugauskas et al, 2003).…”

“…Djelomični rezultati SEM i XRD analiza prikazani su na slici 4. U dvije slične studije, Boke i dr. [6] analizirali su mort u tri povijesna kupališta u Anatoliji, dok su Ipekogly i dr. [7] analizirali vapneni mort u medresama, povijesnim obrazovnim ustanovama. Ti su autori dobili mineraloški sastav koji odgovara sastavu određenom u palači Beylerbeyi.…”

“…Although the bricks used in the domes of the investigated baths were fired at low temperatures and consisted of small pores, the structural systems of the baths remained without losing their integrity. This can be explained by moderate climatic conditions ofİzmir [20] and by the use of brick-lime plasters (cocciopesto) which prevents water penetration to the building and also prevents evaporation through bricks [2].…”
