Assessment of major and daily stressful events during adolescence: The Adolescent Perceived Events Scale.

Abstract: Four studies were conducted to develop a measure of major and daily stressful events during adolescence, the Adolescent Perceived Events Scale (APES). Study I identified an item pool of events that were drawn from the open-ended reports of adolescents. In Study 2, multidimensional scaling analysis was used to identify the salient features of stressful events that were cognitively appraised by adolescents. Study 3 examined the test-retest reliability of the APES, and Study 4 examined the concurrent validity of … Show more

“…Para evaluar la presencia de acontecimientos vitales y estresantes y la forma en que estos son percibidos empleamos una versión adaptada a nuestra cultura del APES (Adolescent Perceived Events Scales, Escalas de Acontecimientos Percibidos para Adolescentes; Compas, Davis, Forsythe y Wagner, 1987). Mide una amplia gama de acontecimientos, incluyendo problemas académicos y familiares, así como dificultades en las relaciones amorosas y de amistad.…”

Participants were first instructed to report a controllable stressful event, defined as "a stressful event having an outcome amenable to change with one's effort."…”

“…The Adolescent Perceived Events Scale-Short Form (APES-SF; Compas, Davis, Forsythe, & Wagner, 1987) comprises a cumulative checklist of 90 items pertaining to normative and non-normative major (e.g., "arrest of a family member") and daily life events (e.g., "doing poorly on an exam/test") representative of adolescent experiences within academic, network, romantic, peer and family domains. Seven items were removed in order to minimise criterion contamination (e.g., "emotional worries").…”
