Assessment of liver size by ultrasonography

Abstract: Sonographic measurement of liver span in the midclavicular line is a simple method for routine clinical use. Gender, age, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, body height, hepatic steatosis, and metabolic syndrome are factors associated with liver span.

“…In humans, hepatic size can be affected by factors such as body mass index, age and sex, with reference ranges for normal liver size differing between patients, as an increased liver size is seen with higher body mass index and in men . A similar finding was not, however, identified in the current study, although the method for the assessment of liver size differed from that used in human studies.…”

“…The choice of 14 cm as the threshold for hepatomegaly for both POCUS and PEx was guided by the JAMA RCE, which states that a detected liver span [12-13 cm correlates with increased probability of hepatomegaly [18]. It was necessary to choose a consistent threshold for both groups; however, we acknowledge the wide variability in definitions of hepatomegaly, and the contribution of factors such as age, sex, body size, and accessory lobes [20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…This is comparable to other studies. 23,24 Height and weight are also independent predictors of liver size. 21,22 Liver is the site of fatty infiltration and overweight or obese people may have increase in amount of fatty infiltration in liver leading to large liver size.…”

“…20 Liver size in our population was higher as compared with Jordanians, and Saudis and lower as compared to Germans. [21][22][23][24] This implies ethnic, social, and cultural differences in attainment of final liver size. Liver size was surprisingly greater in females than males.…”
