Assessment of liver fibrosis by ultrasound elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound: a randomized prospective animal study

Abstract: This study aimed to assess liver fibrosis by contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and point shear-wave elastography (pSWE) in rabbits and compare the performance of the two techniques. Eighty rabbits were divided into experimental (n=60) and control group (n=20). In the experimental group, liver fibrosis (F1–F4) was induced by subcutaneous injection of carbon tetrachloride. CEUS and pSWE of the liver was performed for the two groups at a 4-week interval for 40 weeks. The portal vein rise time (PV-RT), time to p… Show more

“…Over the years, CEUS has also been used to investigate the presence of oesophageal varices (EV) based on time–intensity curves [ 31 , 32 ], and the results show that CEUS can predict EV. CEUS has also been used in animal models to investigate liver fibrosis [ 33 , 34 ], and it was concluded that this method has diagnostic performance for liver fibrosis, similar to our study.…”

“…In a previous study of rabbit liver tumors, the median LSV on SWE were 7.0 kPa (6.0, 8.3) for fibrosis stages F0-F1, 9.5 kPa (7.8, 11.4) for stage F2, 13.0 kPa (10.4, 16.7) for stage F3, and 25.8 kPa (21.7, 34.5) for stage F4 ( Guibal et al, 2016 ). In a carbon tetrachloride-induced rabbit liver fibrosis model, the areas under the ROC curve for LSV in diagnosing stages ≥ F1, ≥F2, ≥F3, and ≥F4 were 0.874, 0.956, 0.954, and 0.933, respectively ( Qiu et al, 2018 ). These previous results are similar to our findings.…”

“…SE is regarded as a promising technique capable of noninvasively evaluating and staging liver fibrosis with high diagnostic accuracy. Meng and colleagues performed SE and liver biopsy in 166 patients with chronic hepatitis B, and they found the diagnostic accuracy of SE was similar to that of TE; the elasticity index and liver stiffness were 0.880 and 0.909 (≥F2), 0,868 and 0.874 (≥F3), and 0.752 and 0.815 (F4), respectively for predicting substantial fibrosis [68]. A study was conducted by Tajiri and colleagues using SE in 598 patients with chronic liver disease and they found that the elasticity index was significantly different between mild (F1–2) and advanced fibrosis (F3–4) [69].…”
