Assessment of level of service measures for two-lane intercity highways under heterogeneous traffic conditions

Abstract: Many researchers have studied the performance of two-lane intercity highways with the help of different measures. In the current study, the performance of such highways under heterogeneous traffic condition was examined by using several speed and followers related measures. The data were collected from five study sites located in different regions of India.A new methodology was proposed where followers were identified by using a Speed Difference (SD) (between two consecutive vehicles) range of -4 to +10 km/hr … Show more

“…The study's conducted by [16] suggests that the silhouette method is a viable approach for determining the optimal number of clusters (k) in clustering analysis. In various comparative experiments, the silhouette width index demonstrated effective performance [14,[17][18]. The clustering process continues either until a predefined number of iterations customer satisfaction as a critical parameter to determine the level of service.…”

“…Levels of service at median openings were quantified through the application of cluster analysis [12][13]. Authors of [14] applied clustering techniques as an analytical tool to assess the performance of two-lane highways under conditions of heterogeneous traffic. The k-mean algorithm was employed for the clustering analysis and to establish varying levels of service ranges through calibration.…”

“…An examination of the previous studies on the capacity of two-lane roads reveals that these studies have primarily concentrated on three key aspects: LOS and capacity, platoon changes, and time headway and spacing headway. In the frst group of the aforementioned studies, several research works have investigated the infuence of various parameters, such as the number of platoons formed by vehicles [11], the HV [12][13][14] [15], the NFPC [16,17], speed of followers and critical H t as functional characteristics [18,19], the PTSF and the ATS [20][21][22], geometric parameters (longitudinal slope and superelevation of the road) [23,24], geometric features of the road and trafc conditions (density, speed, and the trafc fow rate) [25][26][27], and density [28] and travel speed using passenger car equivalent [29] on the LOS and road capacity.…”

“…The analysis was conducted in MATLAB and the number of iterations was set to 100 to obtain optimal boundaries. Consequently, the Silhouette plot was used to validate the distance selection criteria for clustering analysis which has been used in several studies (Rousseeuw 1987;Saha 2013 andBoora et al 2017). The silhouette plot having a value of 0.70 was examined with the help of the universal thumb rule as shown in Table 5 which seemed reasonable.…”
