Background: Pharmacovigilance is concerned with public health and adverse drug reactions. The essence of pharmacovigilance is the reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). All health care professionals should have knowledge about pharmacovigilance. Objective: To assess knowledge of unani and ayurveda practitioners regarding pharmacovigilance. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 190 selected Unani and Ayurveda practitioners who graduated from Govt-Unani and Ayurvedic medical college. Purposive sampling method was applied for sampling. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed and the respondents were interviewed face to face maintaining confidentiality and privacy. Study places were Govt-Unani and Ayurvedic Medical College of Dhaka and Sylhet and Private medical chambers of Unani and Ayurveda practitioners. Results: This study revealed that out of 190 respondents 60% belonged to age group of 20-34 years and 3.7% were within the age group greater than 54 years and mean age were 34.55±7.42 years. 64.7% of the respondents were Unani practitioners and 35.3% were Ayurvedic practitioners. Regarding concept of pharmacovigilance, 22.6% of the respondents had good knowledge whereas 22.1% of the respondents had good knowledge about ADR and drug safety. Out of total 190 respondents 34.7% had good knowledge regarding pharmacovigilance, 35.8% of respondents had fair knowledge and 29.5% had poor knowledge regarding pharmacovigilance. Conclusion: This study revealed that majority of Unani and Ayurveda practitioners had fair knowledge regarding pharmacovigilance. Education and training programs are necessary to improve knowledge of Unani and Ayurveda practitioners. Bangladesh Medical Res Counc Bull 2022; 48(3): 219-224

Background Homoeopathy is the newest art and science of healing. Like conventional medicine, pharmacovigilance is an important aspect of homoeopathy. There is a paucity of knowledge and ignorance among the practitioners. The necessity is to create awareness and encourage the homoeopathic professionals regarding drug safety surveillance, documentation and reporting of adverse events. Methods A web-based online search from databases, journals, bibliographic resources regarding the practice of pharmacovigilance in homoeopathy was done. Articles and publications till January 2021 along with literature from homoeopathic books were analysed. Results Data on adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and events in homoeopathy have been collected and reported in European countries. In India, of late these terminologies are being acknowledged among a group of homoeopathic practitioners only. Still, a dearth of cognizance on the subject exists and little reporting is done. People usually do not relate such adverse reactions to the use of homoeopathic medicines. For scrutinising the same, the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, has taken an initiative for Pharmacovigilance of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani & Homoeopathy systems of medicine for reporting and taking measures against ADR and objectionable advertisements. The probable risk factors and ways to prevent ADR and benefits of pharmacovigilance in homoeopathic practice could be deduced. Conclusion Homoeopathy is a widely followed system of medicine that is quite popular among the common people. The need of knowledge and promotion of suspected ADR reporting should be emphasised to increase the credibility of homoeopathy among the scientific community. Also, the profession should refrain from misleading and objectionable advertisements in print and electronic media.

BACKGROUND Drug therapy is a prerequisite in the management of different medical conditions, but one of the major concerns about it is drug related adverse effects. Pharmacovigilance is the science of conducting, assessing, understanding and preventing adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Reporting ADRs is the core of pharmacovigilance. So, this study was conducted with the aim of evaluating knowledge, attitude and practice of pharmacists and nurses about reporting ADR. METHODS A descriptive questionnaire-based study was carried out among 100 nurses and 15 pharmacists working in community pharmacies and Amir-Almomenin and Imam Khomeini hospitals of Zabol. The responses to KAP questionnaire were analysed by SPSS version 18.0. RESULTS Majority of pharmacists and nurses did not have enough knowledge about the context of pharmacovigilance, its classifications, its frequencies as well as national guidelines for reporting ADRs. We found out that the majority of our study population (60% of pharmacists and 63% of nurses) had the experience of detecting ADR but only 13.3% of pharmacists and 22% of nurses had reported it. Reasons for not reporting ADR were as follows: being uncertain that the reaction is drug related, it's legal consequences, routine or known ADRS, being unfamiliar with the process of reporting ADRs and being too busy to report. CONCLUSIONS We observed that our pharmacists and nurses did not have desirable knowledge, attitude and practice towards pharmacovigilance. This fact emphasizes the importance of different corrective interventions as conducting CMEs, workshops, as well as special emphasis on pharmacovigilance in medical, pharmacy and nursing undergraduate and post graduate curriculum and its incorporation in their internship.
